A follow up to seeking silence

Take time out, tea optional

My last post bemoaned the lack of quiet time in my life and with the first (mostly) free weekend here in ages it seemed like the perfect opportunity to schedule some quality silence.

So far things are going better than I expected. Let’s take a look at what happened during my first quiet period of the weekend.

Peace and quiet – moment number 1

Time and date: 13.24 Saturday 29th May 2010

Location: A quiet room, alone

Guess what! I have finally found some peace. The other half has disappeared for what may possibly be the world’s longest shower. I have settled down with a cup of Afternoon Tea, sans milk and I’ve just read as much as I can from a new philosophy guide. No sparks of genius yet but I can already feel my mind breathing a sigh of relief.

Uh oh, the sound of approaching feet!

Just before I have time to roll my eyes and pack up my computer the noise dissipates. Maybe the solitude will last a little longer. Maybe he read my mind.

No. They’re coming back!

It turned out that the approaching feet weren’t the harbingers of doom I’d supposed. In fact, by gaining those quiet minutes before hearing the footsteps I was able to achieve a calm and collected mood that has lasted. Over an hour after the footsteps approached, the room is still relatively quiet and I am still feeling fairly creative. In fact, the loudest thing in the room is now me! The sound of my typing is the only thing to break the silence as my other half, bless him, is reading a book on his e-reader. Not even page turning to disturb me. Strangely, I do not feel guilty.

The only thing to break my creativity now is my own hunger. It is time for lunch, which I will eat secure in the knowledge that…

Moment number 1 is a resounding success!
